“We have monitoring” can mean a ping, a CPU board, or a platform that follows each transaction. Ambiguity appears during an incident: everyone sees data, but no one can quickly explain what changed. observability vs monitoring vs APM avoid buying tools to solve the wrong problem.

The difference in a sentence

  • Monitoring: warns when a known condition departs from what is expected.
  • APM: explains the performance of applications and transactions.
  • Observability: allows us to infer the state of the system by correlated signals and context.

These are not levels that necessarily replace the previous one. A good observation needs reliable monitoring; an APM needs metrics, alerts and operational practices.

Visual comparison

Criterion Monitoring APM Observability
Focus Availability and resources Applications and transactions End-to-end system and experience
Typical data Metrics, checks, logs Traces, mistakes, runtime, DB Metrics, logs, traces, profiles, events and business
Question Is it working? Where is the application degraded? Why does it happen and what impact does it have?
Ideal architecture Predictable environments Critical applications Distributed and Changing Systems
Main risk Warnings without context Partial coverage or cost per host Volume, cardinality and complexity

Monitoring: detecting what we already know

Monitoring compares signals with defined conditions. It is excellent for availability, capacity, certificates, jobs and operating limits. If a disk exceeds a threshold or an API fails to respond, you must warn without the need for a complex platform.

Google SRE distinguishes alerts that require immediate human action from information useful for analysis. That difference is critical: a system that pages for each deviation produces fatigue and hides actual incidents.

Monitoring fails when thresholds do not represent impact or when architecture changes faster than its configuration.

APM: Follow the transaction

APM instrument applications to observe rate, errors, duration, dependencies and code. Faced with high latency, you can point out that most of the time is consumed in an external call or specific query.

It is the natural option when a critical application has multiple services, frequent deployments, or difficult to reproduce problems. Its limit appears when research needs infrastructure, network, security, or business context that is not integrated.

Observability: investigate the unknown

Observability is not reduced to “having logs, metrics and traces”. It requires signals to share attributes, time and identity, and to be consulted from an operational question.

An observable environment allows you to start from a symptom — for example, rejected payments in a region — and navigate to version, service, dependency, resource, and related events. That capability is valuable when fault modes cannot be listed in advance.

Three scenarios to choose from

Stable institutional site

Availability, certificates, synthetic performance, bug logs and backups may be enough. Full observability would add more operation than value.

Transactional application

You need APM, RED metrics, errors and correlation with deployments. If you use multiple clouds or services, you should add full stack telemetry.

Microservices platform in Kubernetes

It requires observability: cluster metrics, logs, distributed traces, topology, SLOs and context of changes. A node board does not explain the experience of a request.

The question is not “which tool I buy”

Before evaluating products, document:

  1. Experiences and critical services.
  2. Frequent fault modes.
  3. Current time to detect and diagnose.
  4. Sources already available.
  5. Managers and coverage schedules.
  6. Data restrictions, retention and budget.

On that basis it is possible to decide whether to extend monitoring, incorporate APM or redesign the telemetry architecture.

Quick decision tree

If the main problem is whether a component is available, I strengthened monitoring and alerts. If you know that the application fails but not where it takes time, try APM on the critical transaction. If the cause goes through services, clouds and equipment, you need observation correlation.

When the symptom first appears in users, add digital experience. When the same data also helps investigate abuse or intrusion, it designs integration with SOC. If the cost already prevents keeping evidence, it prioritizes governance, cardinality and sampling before adding another platform.

This sequence does not require buying different tools. The same platform can cover several capacities; the important thing is that each investment has a question and a result metric.

Signals of overengineering

  • Services that nobody operates are being implemented.
  • Each team creates different names and labels.
  • Dashboards duplicate information without an associated decision.
  • Traces are kept at 100%, although they are rarely consulted.
  • The cost increases with traffic, but does not decrease the diagnostic time.

Observability should not become another distributed system impossible to observe.

An incremental path

Start with a business experience. I measured your symptoms with four signals: traffic, errors, latency and saturation. Instrument the most critical transaction, correlate logs and changes, and prove a failure. Only later expands services and retention.

This approach allows to demonstrate value before compromising a large migration or contract.

Document the result with an anterior and posterior metric: time to detect, time to locate the cause, alerts without action or cost per service. Without a baseline, a test can look impressive and still not improve the operation.

CTL can perform a monitoring assessment, APM and observability, identify overlaps and design a roadmap with current or new tools. Coordinate a meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grafana monitoring or observability?

Grafana is a visualization and analysis platform that can be part of both strategies. Its scope depends on the sources, correlation and operation built around it.

Does an SIEM replace an observability platform?

No. They share data and some capabilities, but SIEM prioritizes safety detection and research. Observability prioritizes health, performance and reliability. Integrating them avoids duplication of useful telemetry.

Do more data mean more observability?

No. Without context, quality and operational questions, more data increases cost and noise. Coverage must be measured by decisions it enables.
